Winter Landscape Paintings

"Mystic Woodlands in Winter"- 24" x36"- Acrylic on Canvas
"Tracks"- 24" x 24"- Acrylic on Canvas
I still experience the feeling of awe in our mystic woods. The sunlight filters it's way through these majestic clearings creating these strong shadows and patterns on the woodland floor. Sometimes the only sound is your breath and the footprints you leave in the snow. The woodlands still offer so much inspiration for my paintings. This winter has been one of the mildest I have seen in many many years. Other years my walks with the dogs have been strictly relegated to the mile long driveway. This year only a few inches of snow has carpeted the woodland floor allowing us to walk in the woods with ease. The dogs have loved it, all the smells and tracking all the various animal trails! All of this life around us happening under our noses would go unnoticed if we didn't get out to explore. This is a mystic world that I adore!

Artist Retreat Weekend with Cambridge Artists

Artists -( left to right) Nancy Brent, Jennifer Depencier, Laurie Wonfor Nolan and myself

It's been a week but I finally got a chance to post this fun weekend with my artist friends ( Nancy, Jennifer and Laurie) from Cambridge. With the sun shining and warm temperatures they arrived Saturday at noon .We feasted on a lunch of salads which included  baby greens , roasted peppers, tomato bruschetta, chick peas with couscous, and fresh organic bread from the "City Cafe". We finished lunch with a warm zucinni soup, yummy. Then we were off to the gravel pit to paint.

The gravel pit has been a source of inspiration for me, my students and visiting artists. Nature has reclaimed this area with a variety of pines, cedars and soft wood trees. Inspiration  abounds with colours, shapes and forms. Every season offers a new perspective and feel in this landscape. I have enjoyed the unexpected appearance of various wildlife and birds, from deer to wild turkeys ,grouse and jack rabbits.

Jennifer captured a lovely woodland scene.

The Ranger was used to transport our painting equipment from location to location.  Even Bailey ( my golden retriever) hitched a ride home with us. It was a funny site with all four us crammed on the bench seat.
Laurie  painting  a yellow birch  on the upper ridge of the gravel pit.   Amazing how the last days of fall there were still leaves hanging on to branches.

We called it a day before the the darkness fell. Gathered in the great room  and while I cooked a pasta dinner we enjoyed some wine and great conversation. After dinner Laurie lead an interesting conversation on art and artists and shared stories from her collection of art books. I didn't want the evening to end but we had to get to sleep so that we could get more painting in on Sunday.
After our morning walk along Pearl Lake Road we enjoyed a filling brunch of omelets, mango/ tomato salsa, black beans and apple pie. We had another successful day of painting and laughs. The weekend went by far to fast and I am looking forward to having them come up again this winter.

Spring Fever

Lace Cap Beauty  Acrylic on Canvas 16" x16"

Here is another floral painting that I just finished. I have wanted to paint this subject for over a year. In our Cambridge garden we had a beautiful Hydrangea bush that would start out with pure white petals. After a week or so the petals would gradually change to these beautiful pastel shades. I took  a few pictures but loved this cropped version the best.

Spring Has Sprung

Apple Blossom Delight  Acrylic On Canvas 24"x 24"
It has been one long winter this year. Last week I started painting some Spring themes. I figure if I start painting spring flowers the season will arrive faster. I am looking forward to our wild apple orchard in bloom. I love the soft pink blush and vivid colouring in the veins of the blooms. The assorted greens of the foliage is so fresh and welcoming after a long winter season.

Spring is Just Around the Corner

Tulip Medley- Acrylic on Canvas- 24" x24"
Spring and tulips are one and the same for me. I think it's time to buy myself a lovely bouquet and start painting some spring themes. The sun is shining so bright today, it feels like spring is around the corner!
I can actually see the gravel on the road . In no time the tulips in the garden will be emerging from their winter slumber. I can't wait!

Windswept Pines

Painting in Progress- Windswept Pines- Acrylic on Canvas
Well the last two weeks I spent in bed with a terrible cold. It sure did knock the stuffing out of me. I finally felt better a few days ago to start painting again. The winter landscape has changed a lot this week because it has been warming up and the rain is washing all the snow away. It sure does feel like spring today! Yesterday I took up a painting that I started a few months ago. I hope to get it finished to a place that I feel it's done. These two pines are on one of our favourite trails above the gravel pit. I love their windswept shape and that they have survived on the edge of the cliff with out falling down.

Painting Accepted into "Best of Grey County " Show

Dancing Light in the Pines- Acrylic on Canvas- 24" x24"
I am so thrilled! Just got a confirmation that one of my painting's - "Dancing Light in the Pines" was accepted into the "Best of Grey County" Art show. This a great start to the year. We artists have a hard time tooting our own horn, but  if we want some recognition we need to let the world know of our accomplishments. Still it is always better when someone else does it for you.

The Snow Storm Came and Went

Painting in Progress- Acrylic on canvas
Well the snow storm came and went. It always amazes me the next day observing how much snow fell in such a short period of time. The snow is now hip depth in the woods. Impossible to traverse now our walks are restricted to the driveway. I have many new pictures to inspire me to create new paintings. I have been working on a new winter woods painting on the largest canvas yet- "36 x 60". Trying to capture the depth and light has been a challenge. So here is my work in progress.

Snow and More Snow

Sold- Retired Under the Cedar Trees

Brandy and Bailey in the Deep Snow
Well we just got dumped with another 12 inches of snow again last night. Living in the country in the north you get used to all the snowfalls. The dogs love it! And I have to admit that a fresh snowfall on the pines is so beautiful. It has been a few weeks now that we haven"t been able to walk in the woods because of the snow depth. I still have a lot of snow scenes to is our neighbours old retired tractor under a cedar tree.

Collage and Acrylic

I have been smitten by the world of collage. I love the different textures and layers that can be created in collage.
It is a wonderful form of art because you can use recycled and natural material that are easily found around the home. Like newspaper, old books and magazines, envelopes , onion skins, leaves that have partially decomposed, bark, tissue paper etc..... The list can go on and on. That isn't including the papers that you can purchase, like oriental washi papers, textured papers and home made papers. Then using your acrylic paints to glaze layers of colour.
Collage for me is about shapes and using negative and positive space. I also love the abstract quality that lends itself to the technique.

New Shows for 2011

SOLD - Moonlit Golden Woods - Acrylic 24' x 24"
I am looking forward to participating in a few more shows this year. Last year I participated in the Saugeen Artist Co Op Art Show and Sale in July in the town of Hanover.  I will post the details of this years show once they are all finalized.
I will also be participating again in the annual  DVSA Auction located  at the Dundas Valley School of Art in the town of Dundas. It is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to display and sell there art work. As well it goes to a great cause to keep the school funded and keep the cultural tourism of the region popular. Last Year I  participated in a month long group show with the Saugeen Artist Co Op at the Riversong Gallery located in the small town of Neaustdt. I was very pleased to have sold one of my paintings on the opening day of the show.
I will keep everyone posted this year of all of the events that I will be participating in. Most importantly it is a great opportunity to display my art and meet the public. And of course to see my family and friends.
